Abnormal Protein Electrophoresis Causes
- Protein electrophoresis is typically performed on serum (the fluid portion of blood), urine samples or, in certain circumstances, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).Serum is obtained by collecting a blood sample by inserting a needle into a vein. Urine samples may either be collected as a random sample (not timed) or a 24-hour urine sample.CSF is collected by a spinal tap (also known as.
- Note: for IEF and electrophoresis, the labeling of cathode and anode are opposite to what you might think (since they are electrolytic cells)! The protein migrates through the field due to charge, and once a protein reaches its pI (the place in the pH field whereby the protein has no net charge ), it will no longer move in the electric field.
- Protein electrophoresis is a common test ordered when you have symptoms suggesting certain conditions. Some examples are listed below. Serum and urine protein electrophoresis may be ordered when you have signs and symptoms of multiple myeloma, such as: Weakened bones that can result in soft spots, fractures, bone lesions and bone pain.
Electrophoresis uses an electrolytic cell (ΔG 0, E cell 0), as described in Chapter 12 of MCAT General Chemistry Review. Remember that anions always move toward the anode and cations always move toward the cathode. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) is a method for analyzing proteins in their native states.
